Hi, this may be a dumb question, but I'm new to Adsense.
If I put ads not only on my website but my forums which are located on
a subdomain, will I get credited for the ads on the subdomain? I'm
assuming since it's part of my root domain, it will work automatically,
right? There's nothing I have to do to get credited and tracked for
subdomains?

This should be ok,
Your ads are being tracked by the google ad client id in your ad code.
It is even ok if you have separate domains. i.e. different sites. But
the all sites and pages should adhere to adsents terms and conditions.
