Georgia State Bar Members Database

This database contains information on all members of the Georgia Sate Bar. Along with all contact data, the dataset also includes the specialty categories for each member.

The Georgia Bar Association was first established in the 1880s by a group of lawyers who lived in the state. This organization would be responsible for bringing a number of benefits to the members, but since many lawyers in the state were not required to join it, it did not have a great deal of power. It is the concept of the Georgia State Bar being an voluntary institution that weakened its ability to be effective. One of the first people to point this out was Charles Gowen, who was president of the Georgia Bar during the 1940s. It was important for the organization to overcome this barrier is they wish to address the many needs of the state. It would also give them the ability to pass crucial legislation.

By 1925, a trend was promoted in which the state bars could become unified. This would also include the Georgia State Bar, which had been working hards towards conversion for many decades. A number of legal scholars in Georgia were responsible for this endeavor. The bill for creating a bar that was combined was finally passed by both the House and Senate by the early 1960s, and the primary goal of this was to give self discipline to these organizations. This had been an important goal of the Georgia State Bar for a long period of time, it had finally become a reality. The Bar President Hugh Dorsey stated that the ability to be given self discipline was very important. The concept of unification has made a number of important changes to the Georgia State Bar.
