Hi John

I like your site first of all. Looks like a good directory.

I can see a few ways you can improve your click through ratio ( CTR).

1. Try putting images next to the ads. This really works. The images don't
even have to be related to the content but if you can make it related it is even better.

Here is one of my sites that we just optimized for the adsense ads.
www.mypimpcodes.com In the middle you can see the adsense ads and right next to them are these funny images. By adding these images and doing a few other little tricks we got the ads CTR 4 to 5 times higher!

2. Try to blend in the ads to the website. For example, the ads with the green edge, make the edge white so you don't see it. The more you blend in the ads the better.

3. I would ad the link ads that go horizontal and have them near the top. These can be very effective and don't take up much space. Here is one of my other sites that has these ads right under the menu:

4. Just having more ads will help. I know you don't want to have too many and have your page look cluttered but I think your site can have three sets of ads on each page and look fine, especially if you have the link ads.
